Performing Arts

Performing Arts at Wasatch Academy is a welcoming program for both new and experienced  musical artists. Exploratory courses provide students with opportunities to discover their curiosities and talents across a variety of forms and genres. Students learn and practice techniques in preparation for solo and ensemble repertoires. Developing musicians and vocalists choose from highly adaptive courses designed to cultivate confident performers.

Courses

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    This course emphasizes instruction, study, and practice in various styles of guitar performance. The course content varies to adapt to students' individual expertise and musical interests. Previous guitar experience is not required for this course.

  • The Modern Ensemble class is a meeting place for the musically inclined to get together with like-minded classmates, create/perform/respond to/ and connect with music in a flexible ensemble environment.

    Participants can create repertoire, rehearse with various band configurations, perform at school events, and connect with their wellspring of musical innovation.

  • Orchestra is a course open to any student at Wasatch. The course is designed to meet the needs of the beginning through advanced string players. Students will learn the fundamentals of music through performance and an engaging curriculum that includes solo, ensemble, and collaborative repertoire. Instruments taught in the orchestra are violin, viola, cello, and double bass (upon request: students are welcome to borrow one of Wasatch’s young professional string instruments).

  • Duration: 1 semester

    This class is open to all piano students regardless of level or experience and focuses on piano basics, such as sight reading, theory, ear training, memorization, technique, and performance. Each student works individually and with others in playing duets and ensembles. Performance is encouraged for all students. 

  • Vocal Ensemble explores choral and vocal ensemble music from various cultures and time periods through study and performance, emphasizing the basics of vocal technique, healthy singing, proper diction, music theory, and music history.

  • Duration: 1 trimester

    Our Music Theory course is differentiated for the needs and experiences of the enrolled students. The curriculum is designed for a broad range of students, including those interested in developing their understanding of music theory through those intending to continue their musical studies in college. Students will be introduced to music fundamentals, including rhythm, melody, harmony, and form. The Music Theory course is highly recommended for students in a musical ensemble. Preparation for the AP Music Theory Exam is available for the advanced student.

  • Deepen your ability to recognize and describe the elements and processes of music. In AP Music Theory, you’ll advance your understanding of how music works by listening to a wide variety of music, reading musical scores, writing music, and singing. Students will be encouraged to take the AP exam in May.
