World Languages

World Languages at Wasatch Academy focus on developing students’ cultural and linguistic competencies, building their skills from foundational to advanced. Living in a global world, the world language department recognizes the importance for students to apply the use of language in academic, social, and professional settings. As such, students are challenged to learn through both academic and experiential curricula. 

Courses

  • This course introduces students to the Spanish language and cultures, emphasizing the four strands of language development: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

  • Spanish 2, students expand their ability to communicate in the Spanish language with greater depth and fluency. The class emphasizes using the language in real-life contexts, strengthening and developing conversational skills, and refining grammar and vocabulary. Exploring the different cultures remains an essential part of the student's learning. Active participation, perseverance, and daily task engagement will help students succeed and grow.

  • Advanced Spanish challenges the students to refine their communication skills while enhancing their cultural and grammatical understanding. This class fosters critical thinking, creativity, and authentic communication through literature, media, and real-life applications. Students are expected to engage in discussions, accurately express themselves, and immerse themselves in the language. Through perseverance and curiosity, the students will develop the skills needed for higher-level proficiency and cultural competency.

  • This introductory course provides a foundational understanding of the Chinese language and culture. Students will develop essential listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, focusing on pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and fundamental grammar structures. Through interactive activities and cultural exploration, students will build confidence in simple conversations and gain insight into Chinese customs and traditions. This course serves as the first step in developing communicative competence for future language learning.

  • This course builds upon foundational Mandarin skills, reinforcing language proficiency and cultural understanding. Students will expand their vocabulary, improve grammatical accuracy, and develop stronger listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. Through interactive activities, real-life dialogues, and cultural exploration, students will gain confidence in holding simple daily conversations and deepen their appreciation of Chinese traditions and customs. This course lays a solid groundwork for continued language study and practical communication in diverse settings.

  • This course is designed to refine students' communicative competence in Mandarin through immersive language experiences. Students will engage in daily real-life conversations, develop advanced listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. The curriculum integrates authentic materials, discussions, and interactive activities to enhance fluency and cultural awareness. Additionally, the course provides targeted preparation for the AP Chinese Language and Culture Exam and the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) Chinese Proficiency Test, equipping students with the skills and confidence needed to excel in formal language assessments.
